Some of the pages on this site are lon. As i have time to imnprove the site i will break them into sub pages an improve the site's inernal navigation. Members are encouraged to send comments about this site or anything else related to the guild to the Guild Master, Aglutis. |

It's Just a Game:
|
World of Warcraft is a game. People play games to have fun. We try to remember that at all times.
All guild rules and policies are intended to support the players in having fun, but there is more than one way to have fun with World of Warcraft. I believe that every player should be free to determine for themself which way gives them the greatest enjoyment... except where it interferes in the fun of other players. One position which we take as a postulate is that it is not necessary to interfere in the fun of other players in order to have fun. I call this the fundamental principle of gaming sportsmanship (FPGS), and it is behind some of the rules and policies of this guild. For some people, fun is a function of getting to the top levels in the game as soon s possible, maximizing every aspect of their character's abilities, and doing only those actions which increase the power or ability of their characters. These people study the mechanics of the game engine looking for features to exploit for their character's benefit, read the supporting web sites for tips on how to finish quests with the minimum possible effort, and avoid any actions that slow their relentless drive towards level 60. I have no criticism of that approach to playing any game, but it is not for me in this one. I have probably spent as much time in my life playing strategic board games and computer wargames as most of the players of World of Warcraft have been alive. In games such as Starcraft or Civilization i will be the first person to analyze the game engine and seek to optimize every action i perform with a single focus: beating the opponent(s). People who wish to treat WoW as yet another wargame - to be optimized and beaten - have my respect and understanding. They bought the game, they pay their monthly fees, and as long as they are not violating the FPGS i have neither the right nor the inclination to critice them for choosing to approach it in this manner. But i note that Blizzard refers to WoW as a MMORPG, not as a wargame, so i make no apologies for choosing to approach this game differently, i.e. more as a role playing game than as a wargame. In a role playing game, people adopt a persona and interact with the world in the way that matches the personality and goals that they have determined for that character. Players try to improve the abilities and equipment of their character, but also put time and effort into developing the character's personality and in social interactions with other characters. A good role player may also give their character some personality flaws, mistaken notions, or outright disadvantages... just to make them more 'human'. Incorporating these flaws in the way they play the character may slow their advancement - or even cripple their chance to succeed in certain activities - but for the true role player, who notes that in real life we all have our own flaws, doing so is considered part of the fun in taking on a new persona. There are 60 levels and lots of ancillary material in World of Warcraft, but the game is finite in nature. Eventually each character will reach the point where the only actions open to them are minor variations of actions they have already performed many times. I am in no hurry to reach that point, but instead intend to savor each step along the path to inevitable boredom with the game. For me, immersing myself in the world of Azeroth as fully as possible by playing a resident of that world, warts and all, is part of the enjoyment of the game. I know that there are other players who share that view and who enjoy the interaction with other characters as much as they enjoy crushing the inhabitants of a dungeon and taking their treasures. This guild is intended to provide a home for players who share this attitude and provide them with role playing opportunities and a way to maximize their character advancement within the limits that good role playing will impose. Those who feel that participating in our approach to the game will enhance their enjoyment of World of Warcraft are welcome to join us in this guild and play along. |

Site Aesthetics:
|
I'm more concerned with getting the content of this site complete than with worrying about making it pretty. After the site's contents settle down, i plan to explore more attractive ways to present this information, but doing so is not a priority at this time. If you are a member of the guild, would like to put in the time and energy to address aesthetics, and have the necessary expertise and tools, you will find me open to any efforts you are willing to volunteer in this regard, but not until after the content of the site becomes more stable. | |
